Alcohol Research: Current Reviews (ARCR) is an open-access peer-reviewed journal published by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) at the National Institutes of Health and is managed by both NIAAA staff and other team members supported by a contract to IQ Solutions. As of 2021, ARCR articles are published online on a continuous, rolling basis, comprising one virtual issue per yearly volume. Topics are proposed by members of the Editorial Advisory Board or NIAAA staff and cover a wide range of disciplines.
Articles published in ARCR are freely available online with no subscription or pay-per-view fees. Browse the journal archive for a listing of previous volumes. Current and past content from the journal, including under previous titles, is archived in PubMed Central.
All ARCR content is Section 508 compliant to ensure that it is accessible to all readers, including individuals with disabilities.
Aims and scope
ARCR is an open-access, interdisciplinary journal with the mission of providing in-depth reviews spanning the field of alcohol research. Areas of interest include the effects of alcohol across the lifespan on health, function, and well-being in addition to basic science, genetics, epidemiology, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of alcohol-related conditions. Topics are approached from basic, translational, and clinical perspectives. Reviews are written in a style that is accessible to a broad audience of scientists and clinicians, including trainees, with varying specialties and degrees of expertise in the field of alcohol research.

There are no fees to publish in ARCR – ARCR is a Diamond Open Access publication. Under the Diamond Open Access model, all content published on the ARCR website may be accessed and downloaded for free, with no restrictions. In addition, authors pay no fees for submission, processing, or color figures.
Diamond Open Access publishing offers increased visibility and exposure for authors with limitless sharing capabilities.
ARCR publication is supported entirely by NIAAA at the National Institutes of Health. Articles are indexed in PubMed Central, PsycInfo, and Web of Science.
