ARCR Launches a New Article Type: Perspective
Alcohol Research: Current Reviews (ARCR) has launched a new article type—Perspective—to expand and strengthen the journal’s ability to cover emerging, fast-moving, and conceptually evolving areas of alcohol science. The inaugural article, “Perspective on Using Artificial Intelligence in Alcohol Research and Treatment: Opportunities and Ethical Considerations,” by Moniz-Lewis, Kirouac, McCool, Schwebel, and Witkiewitz, is now available.
ARCR’s mission is to provide in-depth, evidence-based reviews across the field of alcohol research for investigators, clinicians, policymakers, and the broader community. In several rapidly advancing areas, however, scientific progress is outpacing the traditional review cycle. Perspective articles are designed to address that gap by enabling timely expert discussion of topics that are new, evolving, or at a methodological pivot point.
What is a Perspective?
Perspective articles present an informed, forward-looking point of view on established or emerging topics relevant to alcohol research. They give readers a succinct, authoritative snapshot of where a field stands at a given moment—helping researchers refine questions, identify gaps, and accelerate scientific progress.
Perspective articles generally fall into two categories:
- Emerging concepts: Forward-thinking discussions of nascent research areas with limited existing literature, or novel interpretations of established areas intended to guide and propel the field.
- Methodological considerations: Analyses of new developments, critiques, and best practices related to methodological or analytical tools used in alcohol research.
Across both categories, Perspective articles:
- Summarize the current state of knowledge
- Offer alternative interpretations of existing findings
- Identify gaps and weaknesses
- Outline promising future directions or conceptual pathways
Although Perspectives leverage the author’s subject-matter expertise, they remain unbiased, fully referenced, and grounded in existing evidence.
